Daniel Sanchez really doesn't like prison life, apparently. Yesterday the 24-year-old, locked up with no bail before being tried for his involvement in a double homicide last year, made a mad dash for freedom from Rikers Island last night around 6:40 p.m., injuring six guards in the process. Unlike some more inventive inmates, homemade nunchucks were not involved in his escape attempt.
According to the Department of Corrections Sanchez had been caught earlier in the day tampering with a window in his cell and had been taken to an office in the detention center. Once there he saw an open door and ran for it, at which point he was set upon by guards and subdued. Three captains and six officers were said to be hurt in the scuffle, and three of them were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Sanchez, along with 22-year-old Brian Roach, has been charged with murder in the first degree in relation to two 2010 murders. A third alleged accomplice in the murder, Ronnell Jones, is still wanted by the police. Jones is suspected of dressing as a woman to evade authorities.
