Today we're taking a look back at our coverage of Hurricane Sandy last year. In this post we're revisiting the horrifying devastation of Breezy Point after the storm and a six-alarm fire. The fire destroyed more than 100 houses and the storm flooded many others; luckily no one was killed. Photographer Tod Seelie ventured out there two days after Sandy and made it past a police checkpoint, where officers were still evacuating stunned residents.

We made additional visits in the following days. While most were happy to be alive, one homeowner told us, "You see these disasters on TV, and you never think it's going to happen to you. Welcome to reality."
