This morning, at 5 a.m., the NYPD responded to a call about a suspicious package that was sent to actor Robert De Niro’s lower Manhattan office. The device was removed by the NYPD's bomb squad by 6:30 a.m.

An NYPD spokesperson confirmed that the package was similar to the ones addressed to the Bedford home of George Soros; Chappaqua home of former President Bill and Hilary Clinton; the Manhattan headquarters of CNN; the Washington D.C. home of former President Barack and Michelle Obama; the L.A. and D.C. offices of Rep. Maxine Waters; and the D.C. office of former Attorney General Eric Holder. The packages have contained pipe bombs; the one sent to CNN, which was addressed to former CIA analyst John Brennan (who is a frequent guest on CNN and a contributor to MSNBC), contained a pipe bomb and white powder.

The device sent to De Niro’s office was X-rayed, the police spokesperson said, and found to contain a device similar to the others.

NBC New York reports, "A law enforcement official briefed on the matter tells News 4 around 4 a.m. a worker saw the news and saw similarities in the package and called police. Another source said the package was addressed to De Niro and added that it had the same stamps and return address, for ex-Democratic National Committee chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, as the others."

The device was removed from the Tribeca office on Greenwich Street and transported in the bomb truck to the NYPD's police facility at Rodman's Neck in the Bronx.

While a motive for sending the devices has not been determined, the intended recipients have all been prominent Democrats or frequent targets of President Trump and his supporters. De Niro has been an extremely outspoken critic of Trump. Ahead of the 2016 presidential election, De Niro delivered a forceful monologue declaring: "I mean he's so blatantly stupid. He's a punk, he's a dog. He's a pig, he's a con, a bullshit artist, a mutt who doesn't know what he's talking about. He doesn't do his homework, doesn't care thinks he's gaming society. Doesn't pay his taxes. He's an idiot." The actor also said, "He talks how he wants to punch people in the face? Well, I'd like to punch him in the face. This is somebody that we want for president? I don't think so."

At the Tony Awards earlier this year, De Niro proclaimed, "Fuck Trump!" and added, "It's no longer 'Down with Trump,' it's 'F**k Trump.'" This prompted Trump to respond on Twitter, "Robert De Niro, a very Low IQ individual, has received too many shots to the head by real boxers in movies. I watched him last night and truly believe he may be 'punch-drunk.' I guess he doesn’t realize the economy is the best it’s ever been with employment being at an all time high, and many companies pouring back into our country. Wake up Punchy!"

This morning, Trump appeared to suggest that the press, which he frequently refers to as "the enemy of the people," was to blame for the attacks.
