A speeding driver fatally ran over two friends walking on a Brooklyn sidewalk shortly after midnight this morning and then fled the scene on foot.
Police responded to the crash, near the intersection of Fulton and Chestnut Streets in Cypress Hills, at 12:12 a.m. today and found Delman Maldonado, 41, and Israel Turcios, 56, unconscious and unresponsive. Investigators say the driver of an Acura TL sedan was headed east on Fulton Street at a "high rate of speed" when the driver hit Maldonado and Turcios. The motorist then hit two parked cars, propelling one of the parked cars in front of Faro Del Pacifico Pupuseria restaurant, PIX 11 reports.
Maldonado was pronounced dead at the scene, while Turcio was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he died. "Friends say they were at a nearby bar owned by the brother of one of the victims and were walking home after putting a friend in a cab," according to WABC 7.
NBC New York reports that friends and family gathered at the crash scene to grieve. "Somebody called me before. 'My friend is dead in the street,' Wilmer Tuscio told NBC.
A friend of Turcio's told WCBS 2, "His kids were grown with kids of their own. He would pay any price to see everyone happy."
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
