A Brooklyn stepfather has been accused of viciously assaulting a 2-year-old who is now brain dead. David Adams, 25, allegedly abused 2-year-old Thaiya Spruill-Smith for months, but things came to a head on Thursday when mom Teoka Spruill, 24, saw the little girl was having problems breathing. She was taken to Brookdale Hospital, and doctors discovered she was bleeding from the brain. By Friday, Thaiya was declared brain dead.
In addition to her brain injuries, doctors also noticed Thaiya had bruising to her arms and forehead. The News reports that Adams admitted to shaking her; according to Thaiya’s aunt D’Anna Smith, Adams made a full confession and used a doll to show detectives "how he violently thrashed the little girl."
Thaiya's father, 26-year-old Terrell Smith, thinks Adams abused her for months; he claims the city investigated the abuse claims, and even took Thaiya out of her mother’s home at one point, but ACS returned her a week later. "[Thaiya] told me she fell through Mommy’s glass table," Smith said, referring bruises and welts on his daughter he noticed over the summer. "When I’m asking my daughter’s mother about the marks, she says to ask her husband."
Spruill met Adams in March and the two married soon after. Adams has now been charged with assault, reckless assault on a child and acting in a manner injurious to a child. The family is expected to take Thaiya off of life support sometime this weekend; the charges against Adams are expected to be upgraded to murder after that.
