As it is with pizza and bagels, every day is burger day in NYC, from the lowbrow bar versions to the over the top creations we'll only dream about. To celebrate the humble meat patty meal we have Burger Week, an annual tribute to the staple of backyard bbqs and fast food joints everywhere. Now in its fourth year, the foodie fest presents burger lovers of all kinds with off-menu treats at their local watering holes, fun chef mashups and even some amped up burger crawls designed to test the top button on your Levis. There's a new event each night during the May 1st through 7th fete; here's what we'll be chowing down on:
The festivities kick off with the Burger Feast, a great big burger tasting featuring seven different restaurants making their best burgers using Schweid & Sons beef. Hudson Common, who's hosting the event, will be offering their burger, plus Ramen Burger, Heartland Brewery, The Ainsworth and others. A $65 ticket includes all of the burgers plus tap beer from Kelso. Friday, May 1st from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
May the 4th be with you at the Star Wars Themed Burgers & Cocktails at Pounds & Ounces. The eatery has a special menu of five themed burgers, like the R2-D2 (Gruyere, pickled onion relish); Chewbacca (double cheddar, double bacon, "Chewpotle" aioli) and Han's First Shot Slider (American cheese, chewy cholula ketchup). As a bonus during the dining, the original trilogy will be screened on the bar's televisions. Monday, May 4, reservations begin at 5 p.m.
Grand Street newcomer Genuine Superette already has a strong burger game and they'll be putting diners to the test, so to speak, to see if they can identify different quality levels of beef. In the Blind Burger Tasting diners are blindfolded, then given three mini-burgers: one made with commodity ground beef, another with Schweid & Sons One-Percenter—that's both Certified Angus Beef and USDA Prime—and the third with a special blend. If you can guess which burgers are which, you'll have to chance to have a burger on the menu named after you! Tuesday, May 5th, 6:30 and 8 p.m. seatings; tickets $29
A burger's natural companion is a beer, so naturally the Burger & Beer Dinner shouldn't be a hard sell for people who enjoy both. The dinner takes place at sprawling West 40th Street restaurant Beer Authority and features a three-burger dinner for two that includes beer pairings, french fries and fried pickles. On the menu: a Pastrami Burger on a pretzel bun, a Spicy Burger with a Habanero Coffee BBQ Sauce and the Goold Ol Boy, served on a black pepper biscuit. Each course comes with a draft of Allagash beer per person. Wednesday, May 6, 6:30 and 8 p.m. seatings; $55 for two people
